Concord, MA (PRWEB) August 5, 2004 — New digital video production tools have dramatically expanded the artistic possibilities available to wedding video producers, which is driving new cinematic storytelling approaches to wedding videography. But one of America’s premier cinematic video storytellers warns that indiscriminate overuse of these new tools can actually diminish the effectiveness of wedding videos. MemoryWorks Studios president Michael Kolowich cautioned today’s brides to consider how storytelling skill and technology mastery work together when selecting a wedding video producer.

A growing percentage of wedding videographers edit their productions digitally on powerful versions of personal computers, and burn their final product directly to recordable DVD and even to online websites. Feature-laden software programs like Adobe Premiere Professional, Apple FinalCut Pro, and Avid Xpress have put Hollywood-style editing capabilities into the hands of editors who are becoming increasingly more comfortable with the technology.

“As story tellers, the technology offers us many new ways to tell a wedding story,” observed MemoryWorks’ Kolowich. Leading videographers have learned to use these tools to emulate the beauty and emotional qualities of film. But with those expanded capabilities come a danger that producers will get carried away with effects, ultimately detracting from the storytelling. Kolowich believes that desktop video production is exposing the same artistic risk that early desktop publishing suffered. “Just as many early desktop-published documents used typefaces so chaotically that they looked like ransom notes. Some of today’s video productions can tend to look like a bad music video — confusing, distracting, and gimmicky.”

Kirstin Lynde, who produces cinematic videos for MemoryWorks, recommends that brides consider carefully the balance of technology and storytelling skills when considering a wedding videographer for their special day. “When you’re finished watching a sample of their work,” suggests Lynde, “ask yourself how much more you know about the couple and their story as a result of watching this video. Wedding videos become an important part of a family’s history; is this how you’d like your wedding story to be remembered?”

MemoryWorks (a division of DigiNovations) today released several new examples of its cinematic wedding storytelling on the company’s website at.  “In our wedding videography, we adhere to strong storytelling themes in order to keep the couple’s unique story at the center of the film,” said Kolowich. “We love to use techniques borrowed from the world of Hollywood feature films, but only in service of the story.”

MemoryWorks has invested in the most advanced production systems available, and has worked closely with several major software developers to help influence the development of features that make cinematic storytelling even more powerful. Such involvement comes naturally to Kolowich, who founded or headed six different software and internet companies over the past fifteen years.

“We’ve set our sights on being one of the most skilled teams at applying new technologies for cinematic video storytelling,” says Kolowich. “And wedding videography gives us a wonderful way to advance that approach.”
