Sparkle, Sparkle, Sparkle!

No doubt you spent a considerable amount of time choosing your engagement ring and wedding bands, so quite naturally you want to take the best care possible.  Since your engagement and wedding rings are the jewelry you will wear more than any other you own, it is important to know how to maintain them.

The following are some easy tips on maintenance:

Keep the Sparkle.  Brides and grooms, you have a mate with a sparkling personality, so let’s keep the gem on your finger just as sparkling.  When putting your rings on or taking them off, try not to touch the center stone.  Touching leaves an oily buildup, which dulls the sparkle and brilliance of your stone.  Always grasp the band or metal portion of your rings (which is called the shank) when putting them on and taking them off.

Want a Quick Sparkle?  Try huffing, a temporary, but brilliant method of shining your stone.  Whenever your ring needs an instant shine, just hold your ring to your mouth and go “huff” with your breath.  The stone will fog up.  Wipe it dry with a soft line-free cloth such as a small handkerchief.

Mr. Clean and a Toothbrush.  A quick and easy way to keep your rings cleaned at home is simply using hot water with Mr. Clean and a medium bristle toothbrush.  Soak, brush, rinse and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.  However, for best results, have your rings cleaned and steamed by your jeweler.  Once or twice a year, have them polished and shined.

Remove your Rings!  Remember to always remove your rings before doing any heavy household work.  Housecleaning chemicals can be very harsh on your rings.  Never swim or garden in your rings.  The chlorine can cause discoloration to certain metals.  Gardening is very harmful because you can chip the stones, bend the prongs, or cause unnecessary scratches on the metal.

Periodic Checkups, Please.  Have your jeweler check your jewelry periodically.  Experts say you should have your rings checked every 18 months.  The bezel or prongs can become badly worn, causing the center stone to fall out.  Never take your rings off to wash your hands when away from home.  Too often they are forgotten and lost.

Store Them Properly.  Another safety measure is storing your rings properly.  Never put your fine jewelry in a box with chunky costume jewelry that can chip and scratch your good pieces.

Beautiful jewelry should be worn.  With proper care your very good pieces can be worn with pride.  Enjoy your rings.
